OXFORD AMERICAN'S ELIZA BORNE WINS YALE PUBLISHING COURSE SCHOLARSHIP

New York, NY (April 14, 2016)—The American Society of Magazine Editors (ASME) is pleased to announce that Eliza Borné, Editor of Oxford American, is the recipient of the 2016 ASME Scholarship to the Yale Publishing Course (YPC) “Leadership Strategies in Magazine Media” program, which will take place July 24-29, 2016, at Yale University.

“ASME was founded 50 years ago in part to provide training for editorial leaders,” said Sid Holt, chief executive of ASME. “Now in its fifth year, the ASME scholarship at the Yale Publishing Course is one of the best ways to accomplish this goal.”

The Yale Publishing Course is designed for mid- to senior- level publishing professionals from around the world. Its mission is to provide participants with a unique educational experience that equips them with the knowledge and skills they need to be effective leaders in a rapidly changing global marketplace.

After much deliberation, the scholarship committee—which included Dorothy Kalins, Director, Dorothy Kalins Ink, and Founding Editor, Metropolitan Home and Saveur; Dick Stolley, Founding editor of People, Managing Editor of Life, and Editorial Director of Time Inc.; and Tina C. Weiner, Director, Yale Publishing Course—chose Borné from an exceptional field of applicants.

Oxford American is a nonprofit quarterly published by The Oxford American Literary Project, Inc., in alliance with the University of Central Arkansas. Founded in 1992, this outstanding literary magazine recently received a literature grant from the NEA and its essays have been included Best American Essays and other anthologies. Eliza Borné became its third editor, and first female editor, when she was pointed in 2015. A few months later, the magazine was awarded a National Magazine Award in General Excellence.

“Eliza Borné is a remarkable young editor whose passion for the Oxford American’s mission is evidenced in the quality of its content and excellence in design,” said Weiner. “Cited by her colleagues for her high expectations, willingness to lead by example, intelligence, and outstanding work ethic, she is eager to attend the Yale Publishing Course to hone her managerial skills as she leads the magazine into a more digitally driven future. The week-long course includes focused lectures and interactive sessions with 30-plus distinguished faculty from the Yale School of Management and industry leaders, including Michael Clinton, President, Marketing and Publishing Director of Hearst Magazines; Kevin Delaney, Co-President of Quartz; Duncan Edwards, President and CEO of Hearst Magazines International; Kim Kelleher, Publisher and Chief Revenue Officer of Wired and Ars Technica; Cindi Leive, Editor-in-Chief of Glamour; and Michela O’Connor Abrams, President of Dwell Media, among many others.
