Pioneering Editor of Lifestyle Magazines to Be Honored at Ellie Awards on March 13

New York, NY (January 18, 2018)—The Board of Directors of the American Society of Magazine Editors today announced the election of Dorothy Kalins to the Magazine Editors’ Hall of Fame. Kalins will be honored at the Ellie Awards Annual Luncheon on March 13, 2018, at Cipriani Wall Street in New York. Danny Meyer, the chief executive officer of the Union Square Hospitality Group and founder of Shake Shack, will present the Hall of Fame Award to Kalins on behalf of ASME.

“Dorothy Kalins is one of the most creative editorial leaders the publishing industry has ever had,” said James Oseland, the editor in chief of World Food and a member of the ASME Board of Directors. “She’s the founding editor of three of the most iconic American magazines of the 20th century: Metropolitan Home, Saveur and Garden Design. Her brands were –and are—accessible, intelligent and intensely beautiful and always adhered to the highest standards of journalistic rigor. The foundations she laid continue to influence magazines today.”

Kalins led Metropolitan Home to the National Magazine Award for General Excellence in 1990 and was later named vice president and editorial director of the Meredith Design Group, which included Traditional Home and Country Home as well as Metropolitan Home. In 1993, Kalins became partner and editor in chief of Meigher Communications, where she was the founding editor of Saveur and relaunched Garden Design as a national consumer magazine. In its first five years, Saveur received 17 nominations for National Magazine Awards and won three, including the award for General Excellence.

Kalins joined Newsweek as executive editor in 2001 with responsibility for rethinking reporting and design processes. She helped direct the magazine’s National Magazine Award-winning coverage of 9/11. In 2006, she launched Dorothy Kalins Ink. As director, she and her team collaborate on book and magazine projects both here and abroad, consulting on editorial positioning, management, staffing and design as well as producing and writing cookbooks.

Kalins has produced and edited books with chefs John Besh, David Tanis, Michael Anthony and Michael Solomonov, whose book “Zahav” was named the 2016 James Beard Cookbook of the Year. Kalins wrote The Shake Shack Book and produced Federal Donuts, The (Partially) True Spectacular Story, both published in 2017. She is at work on a third book with Solomonov and Steven Cook, Israeli Soul, to be published in 2018. She is also an editorial consultant to Panna, a leading-edge video cookbook.

Kalins was the first woman ever named Adweek's Editor of the Year. She is also a recipient of the Matrix Award from Women in Communications for her work in magazines. In 2010, she accepted the Exceptional Woman in Publishing Award from WIPP (Women Impacting Public Policy). In 2013, she was inducted into the James Beard Foundation’s Who’s Who of Food & Beverage in America. Kalins was the longtime chair of the Journalism Committee of the James Beard Foundation and directed the magazine-editorial curriculum at the Stanford Professional Publishing Course. She is currently a faculty advisor to the Yale Publishing Course.

The Magazine Editors’ Hall of Fame was established in 1995 by the American Society of Magazine Editors to recognize the editorial achievements and career-long accomplishments of leading journalists and honors distinguished service to magazine media. Among the members of the Hall of Fame best known to the general public are Graydon Carter, Anna Wintour, Martha Stewart, Tina Brown, Hugh Hefner, Gloria Steinem, Jann S. Wenner and Helen Gurley Brown.

The American Society of Magazine Editors is the principal organization for magazine journalists in the United States. The members of ASME include the editorial leaders of most major consumer and business magazines published in print and on digital platforms. Founded in 1963, ASME works to defend the First Amendment, preserve editorial independence and support the development of journalism. ASME sponsors the Ellie Awards in association with the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and publishes the ASME Guidelines for Editors and Publishers.
