WINNER OF THE 2012 ASME SCHOLARSHIP TO THE YALE PUBLISHING COURSE ANNOUNCED

NEW YORK, NY (May 23, 2012)—The American Society of Magazine Editors (ASME) is pleased to announce that Jennifer Owens, Editorial Director of Working Mother Media, is the recipient of the inaugural ASME Scholarship to the Yale Publishing Course: Leadership Strategies in Magazine and Digital Publishing, which will take place July 15-20, 2012 at Yale University.

“ASME is proud to partner with the Yale Publishing Course to offer this scholarship. Part of ASME’s mission is to provide training for editorial leaders, and one of the best ways to accomplish that goal is to send an ASME member to New Haven for five days this summer,” said Sid Holt, Chief Executive of ASME.

The Scholarship committee, which included Dorothy Kalins, Director, Dorothy Kalins Ink, and Founding Editor, Metropolitan Home and Saveur; Dick Stolley, Senior Editorial Advisor, Time Inc., Founding Editor, People; and Tina C. Weiner, Director, Yale Publishing Course, reviewed the outstanding field of applications. They felt that Jennifer Owens’ enthusiasm for the program and her experience at a variety of magazines would make her a very valuable addition to the Course.

“Jennifer’s substantial experience in magazine publishing, coupled with her expressed desire to spend a week devoted to finding real world answers to the future of the industry, made her a perfect match for the program,” said Kalins.

Distinctive in its collegial style and global approach, the Yale Publishing Course offers both an overview of the magazine industry and in-depth exploration of specific topics ranging from editorial and design to advertising, marketing, finance, and management.

“The Yale Publishing Course is one of the only publishing programs designed for mid- to upper-level magazine professionals from all over the world. It provides them with not only the knowledge and skills they need to be more effective leaders, but also the time to reflect and allow themselves to think outside the box,” said Weiner. “Because of the interactive nature of the sessions and our limited enrollment, participants build relationships with and get feedback from their fellow participants as well as from the carefully-chosen speakers.”

The week-long course includes focused lectures and interactive sessions with 30-plus distinguished faculty from the Yale School of Management and industry leaders, including: Michael Clinton, President, Marketing and Publishing Director, Hearst Magazines; Duncan Edwards, President and CEO, Hearst Magazines  International ; Kim Kelleher, Worldwide Publisher, TIME; Cynthia Leive, Editor-in-Chief, Glamour; Pam McCarthy, Deputy Editor, The New Yorker; and Bob Sauerberg, President, Condé Nast.  For a full list of speakers, visit the Yale Publishing Course website: http://publishing-course.yale.edu/2012ypcmag.
