JAMES BENNET ELECTED ASME PRESIDENTAtlantic editor in chief to oversee National Magazine AwardsNEW YORK, NY (February 3, 2016)—James Bennet, editor in chief and president of The Atlantic, was elected president of the American Society of Magazine Editors at the American Magazine Media Conference on Tuesday, February 2, at the Grand Hyatt New York. AMMC is sponsored by MPA—The Association of Magazine Media with ASME. Bennet succeeds Mark Jannot, vice president, content, of the National Audubon Society, who will continue to serve on the board ex officio. As president of ASME, Bennet will oversee the 2017 National Magazine Awards for Print and Digital Media. Known as the Ellies, for the Alexander Calder stabile “Elephant” given to each winner, the National Magazine Awards are the preeminent honor for print and digital media in the United States. The Ellie Awards are sponsored by the American Society of Magazine Editors in association with the Columbia Journalism School and are administered by ASME. "I'm honored to have the chance to represent my fellow editors during such an exciting time,” said Bennet. “This is an era of experimentation for all of us, and I want to make sure that ASME is there to help its members meet the challenges ahead.” Also elected were Dana Points, editor in chief of Parents, as vice president of ASME; Christopher Keyes, vice president and editor of Outside, as secretary; and Janice Min, president and chief creative officer of The Hollywood Reporter, as treasurer. ASME officers serve one-year terms and are eligible for reelection to a second term. In addition to the election of officers, Scott Dadich, editor in chief of Wired, was reelected to his second term on the ASME Board of Directors. Also elected to the ASME board were Christene Barberich, global editor in chief and co-founder of Refinery29; Vanessa De Luca, editor in chief of Essence; Lucy Kaylin, editor in chief of O, The Oprah Magazine; and Kate Lewis, editorial director of Hearst Digital Media. ASME board members serve two-year terms and are eligible for reelection to a second term. Continuing as members of the ASME board are Jonathan Dorn, senior vice president, digital, of Active Interest Media; James Oseland, editor in chief of Rodale’s Organic Life; Norman Pearlstine, executive vice president and chief content office of Time Inc.; Michele Promaulayko, editor in chief of Yahoo Health; Joshua Topolsky, former editor in chief of Engadget and co-founder of The Verge; and David Zinczenko, founder of Galvanized Media and editorial director of Men’s Fitness.
