ASME ANNOUNCES 2025-2026 BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Alison Overholt elected president; new board members include editorial leaders at award-winning magazines and websites

NEW YORK (May 20, 2025)—The American Society of Magazine Editors today announced the results of its annual election. Alison Overholt, Founder, Good People LLC, was elected president of ASME by general consent. As president, Overholt will oversee the National Magazine Awards, which are sponsored and administered by ASME.

Joining Overholt as ASME officers are Joe Brown, Publisher and Editorial Director, one5c, elected vice president; Julia Turner, Senior Fellow, USC Center on Communication Leadership and Policy, elected treasurer; and Stephanie Mehta, CEO and Chief Content Officer, Mansueto Ventures, elected secretary.

Overholt was the first woman to run a major American sports magazine when she was named editor in chief of ESPN The Magazine. She later became general manager of Oprah Daily before launching Good People LLC, a creative content strategy and production company, and joining the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism as an adjunct professor to teach the business of media.

“No doubt this is a time of tremendous change for magazines and websites—but I have always believed that periods of change and upheaval pave the way for innovation and creativity,” said Overholt. “I’m looking forward to working with the ASME board to meet this moment, where we address the challenges and support the opportunities our members are encountering.”

Newcomers to the ASME Board of Directors, each of whom was elected to a two-year term, include Rick Berke, Cofounder and Executive Editor, STAT; Katie Drummond, Global Editorial Director, WIRED; Jeffrey Goldberg, Editor in Chief, The Atlantic; Nathan Lump, Editor in Chief, National Geographic; Ross McCammon, Editor in Chief, Texas Monthly; Nikki Ogunnaike, Editor in Chief, Marie Claire; and Swati Sharma, Editor in Chief, Vox.

Reelected to a second two-year term on the board were Richard Dorment, Editorial Director, Men’s Health and Women’s Health; Sid Evans, Editor in Chief, Southern Living; Ivylise Simones, Creative Director, Slate; and Nikhil Swaminathan, CEO, Grist. Simones is the first creative director to serve on the ASME board.

Amanda Kludt, Senior Editor, Projects and Initiatives, The New York Times, will continue to serve on the board as the immediate past president of ASME until 2027.

ASME wishes to thank for their exemplary service the members of the board of directors whose terms are now expiring, including Susan Goldberg, President and CEO, GBH; Radhika Jones, Editor in Chief, Vanity Fair; Paul Reyes, Editor, Virginia Quarterly Review; Liz Vaccariello, Editor in Chief, First for Women and Woman’s World; and Charles Whitaker, Dean, Medill School of Journalism, Media, Integrated Marketing Communications, Northwestern University. Clara Jeffery, Editor in Chief, Mother Jones and The Center for Investigative Reporting, the immediate past president of ASME, is also leaving the board after a decade of service.

The ASME Board of Directors consists of 16 members, including four officers and the immediate past president. Board members serve two-year terms and are eligible for reelection to a second term. Officers serve one-year terms and are eligible for reelection to a second term. The immediate past president serves ex officio.
