Role: This is a full-time position with competitive benefits and salary. Our office is in the historic Bradbury building is downtown Los Angeles, but we will also consider remote workers.
Responsibilities: ~Report to and work closely with the executive editor on digital and print ~Commission primarily essays and longform essays — but also interviews, reportage and videos — on policy/governance, climate change, philosophy, economics, technology, geopolitics and culture ~Assign and stay on track of deadlines ~Edit pieces from start to finish, including developmental editing, backfielding (sometimes significantly reworking or asking for rewrites or additions) and copy editing ~Write sharp heds and deks ~Work with the art editor to make sure the original art they commission reflects the nuances of the written work for each piece ~Strategize with the audience growth editor on how best to promote each piece ~Load and publish pieces using our CMS ~Find and recruit new authors to add to our freelance author base ~Because we are a small team, we all pitch in on varied tasks, which may include working with engineers to make changes to the CMS when needed, submitting for awards, occasionally fact-checking, etc.
Requirements: ~5 or more years of experience as an editor ~Fluency in digital media ~Knowledge of the topics we cover ~Strong writing and communications skills ~Bachelor’s degree
Pluses: ~Experience in print media ~Fluency in foreign languages
Salary range: $110,000 – $160,000/yr
