Editor in Chief of Independent Agent

Job Purpose:  The editor-in-chief oversees all aspects of monthly print and digital Independent Agent magazine (circulation: 40,000) and is responsible for the creative and editorial direction of the overall content and production. This role also includes managing the business relationship with IA’s outside publisher and advertising sales firm (Naylor).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

Content Development/Planning:

  • Generate editorial calendar and story ideas and oversee content curation for monthly magazine’s print and digital editions for members and partners of the Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of America (IIABA or the Big “I”).
  • Recruit contributors and assign writing tasks; serve as point of contact to discuss story subject, deadlines, word counts, etc.
  • Ensure that all deadlines are met, and that the magazine is published on budget
  • Edit news and feature stories; oversee fact checking, line edits and final magazine proof
  • Write and contribute magazine content, feature articles
  • Collaborate with writers and publisher on headlines, captions, graphics and pull quotes for print stories.
  • Manage magazine coverage for annual association Legislative Conference
  • Represent magazine at company partner meetings and industry conferences when needed
  • Coordinate with communications department staff on shared content opportunities across all association’s digital and member messaging platforms 

Publishing/Business Management:

  • Serve as primary contact/liaison to outside publishing firm and conduct regular meetings with publisher’s design, production and advertising staff on monthly layout, ad sales, cover design, and proofing process in preparation for digital and print publication
  • Oversee annual magazine budget, financial priorities and publisher contract
  • Act as point of contact for circulation director and subscription updates
  • Provide direction on advertiser strategy including marketing, circulation and product development
  • Supply information to support annual financial audit
  • Coordinate with outside readership survey vendor on annual content and advertising surveys             

Education and professional Requirements:

  • Undergraduate degree in journalism (preferred), communications, public relations, English or a related field
  • 10 or more years of progressive professional experience in a communications role (preferably editorial role); marketing experience a plus
  • Solid knowledge of the insurance industry and/or small business preferred; association experience a plus
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products and basic knowledge of HTML preferred
