Eater is looking for an experienced writer and editor who will play a major role in producing quality journalism for one of its marquee publications, Eater Chicago. This is a full-time, union position.

What you’ll do:

  • Produce shorter news stories and longer features under tight deadlines, both assigned and independently generated, on a diverse selection of restaurant-related topics, cuisines, and Chicago neighborhoods
  • Produce and edit a variety of service-oriented maps and guides aimed at helping readers navigate the Chicago restaurant scene
  • Contribute to collaborative editorial projects, including regularly-running roundups and special projects as they arise
  • Maintain a wide network of sources both inside and outside the Chicago hospitality industry
  • Contribute to coverage of the unveiling crisis surrounding COVID-19 and its impact on the Chicago restaurant community
  • Assist with Eater’s social media efforts, including Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook, to promote the site’s content
  • Produce Eater Chicago’s daily newsletter when scheduled for that duty
  • Assist with editing the work of other staffers and assign and edit work from Eater Chicago freelancers and photographers as needed
  • Occasionally fill in for the site lead during absences for vacation, etc. temporarily overseeing the overall editorial workings of the site
  • Participate in cross-brand promotional efforts and collaboration with the national team as communicated by other team managers, and collaborate with other cities and Eater teams as needed
  • Occasionally appear on panels, radio, and other public appearance as appropriate for the brand

What you'll bring:

  • Experience in journalism, particularly with breaking daily news, developing sources and covering a beat, and editing copy
  • The motivation to support and write in-depth stories when needed
  • Comfort with cold calling and fast pace of digital news, as well as a sense of urgency
  • Knowledge of Chicago’s media market and a drive to continue Eater’s reputation as the number one source furthering the conversations about the restaurant world in Chicago and beyond
  • A drive to predict vs. react to the news cycle; an ability to create proactive vs. reactive narratives about the restaurant industry
  • Ability to report news quickly and with a sense of urgency, meet tight deadlines, and work efficiently
  • Attention to detail, news judgement, story packaging, and careful eye for accuracy
  • Interest in digital headline writing, analytics, and social media publishing
  • Superior organizational skills to keep up with openings, story deadlines, and events
  • Excellent focus and the ability to work independently
  • Impeccable grammar and attention to detail with an eye toward clean copy
  • Comfort with adapting to new content management systems
  • The motivation to embrace and embody Vox Media Values
  • The ability to find compelling stories, as well as distinguish between influencer/PR fluff and legit news, looking beyond press releases to shine a light on underserved communities and cuisines
  • A love of Chicago’s culinary culture and familiarity with its different neighborhoods

Bonus points for:

  • Experience covering business, real estate, hospitality, or legal matters
  • Experience with sourcing photos and article layout
  • Experience with writing and/or editing long-lead, high-touch feature stories
  • Social media experience, both personal and professional, including food photography skills
